Tesla Chronicles #10 - Towing a Uhaul Trailer

(Posted to Facebook 9/1/2021)

Rented Uhauls largest trailer for Ben’s movin today. That worked perfectly….. tons of power (didn’t even feel the weight of the trailer), and the regenerative braking worked just like it always does….rarely had to use the brakes…. And used the Autopilot in traffic to get down there, so I wasn’t touching the gas or brake at all….. the only minor issue was trying to street park a car with trailer…… but after we unloaded, 3 spots opened on the other side of the street so I went around the block and parked there for a few hours before getting back to the rental place and then getting back home before the heavy rain starts this afternoon.

The big issue with towing with an EV is the drag caused by the trailer. I average 300 W/mile for most of my driving in the 65-75 mph range. I averaged 500 W/mile doing 60-65 today coming back from Philadelphia. On a cross country trip, staying at 65 mph, I’d have to stop every 100 miles or so….might be able to sneak in a 120 miles….but that is it…. Compared to 180-200 miles easy without a trailer.

Next adventure…. 250 miles with a kayak on the top.
