Tesla Chronicles #11 - Kayak

(Posted to Facebook 9/2/2021)

For reference - 75-80 mph equates to about 300 WH/mile with nothing on the car….

With the Kayak on the roof…..speed kills range. 73 vs 75 mph was a 30-50 WH/mile difference…. I averaged 360-380 at 73 mph and about 410 at 75 mph. Once off the highway and doing 50-65 mph, I was back down under 300 WH/mile. 360 WH/mile was our total average over 260 miles. About 75 miles of the trip was done at 40-65 mph.

Despite all this, we only really needed one stop to charge up (we actually did two but that was to make sure we had some extra charge once we were at our destination)….I was expecting we might have needed 3 stops with possibly 500 WH/mile at highway speeds….glad it wasn’t that high.

Our one long stop was for lunch….33 minutes of charging….. but it really didn’t feel that long. We ordered foot, took our bio breaks, picked up food, and sat in the car and ate quick. We left shortly after we finished eating, so the stop didn’t feel any longer than it would have been in an ICE.
